As the availability of fossil fuels decreases over time, it is critical to move towards renewable energy sources. One of those renewable energy sources is biofuel, described as fuels derived from biomass – any matter derived from plants or animals. Biofuels are better for the environment for many reasons. There are several prominent types available so which should you choose? Tragar Express, Long Island’s premier energy company, is here to explain three types of renewable liquid fuels, their differences, and how they help the environment while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
3 Types of Renewable Heating Fuels
- Biodiesel
Biodiesel can be made from vegetable oils, animal fat, and even recycled restaurant grease! Some of these oils include rapeseed, soybean, palm, coconut, or jatropha oils. Biodiesel production occurs by a chemical process called transesterification, where fats and oils are converted into fatty acid methyl esters when mixed with alcohol, as explained by EIA.gov. Using biodiesel is beneficial for the environment because it reduces life cycle emissions. Any released carbon dioxide gets absorbed while growing soybeans or other feedstocks used to make the biodiesel.
- Ethanol
Ethanol is colorless alcohol created from various biomass materials. Fuel ethanol, states EIA.gov, is produced from grains and crops with high starch and sugar content such as corn, sorghum, barley, sugar cane, and sugar beets.” Ethanol is better for the environment because it is non-toxic and biodegradable, unlike gasoline. The biomass used to make ethanol absorbs carbon dioxide, which may offset the CO2 produced when the ethanol is burned.
- Bioheat®
Bioheat® is a clean-burning home heating oil blend comprised of standard heating oil and biodiesel. Bioheat® is excellent for the environment because it offers a way to reuse resources that would otherwise be thrown away. It reduces global warming gas emissions that would later circulate into the air. Additionally, using Bioheat® for home oil heating can help break down any lingering sludge inside your boiler, which improves the efficiency of your boiler over time. Tragar Express uses Bioheat® to heat your home because we care about our customers and our environment!
